Common Issues Addressed in Substance Use Therapy

  • Feeling out of control: If you feel like your substance use is in control of your life, therapy can teach you ways to address urges and disrupt behavioral patterns that contribute to continued use.

  • Trust: Substance use can make it feel like you don’t know yourself or your desires. Therapy can help rebuild your trust in yourself by helping you better understand your values and giving you the tools to act in accordance with them.

  • Navigating Discomfort: Learn new ways to cope with discomfort in your life and prioritize your health and wellbeing.

  • Interpersonal Conflicts: If substance use has contributed to conflicts with your loved ones, therapy can help better align your behaviors with your values.

  • Communication: Therapy provides a safe, non-judgemental space to discuss your substance use. We use this space to build confidence in your ability to seek out help and support.

How Substance Use Therapy Can Help:

Substance use therapy is a form of psychotherapy designed to help individuals reduce their substance use, rebuild confidence in their ability to live without substance use, and better understand their motivations or desires to use substances. Substance use therapy offers many benefits, including:

  • Grow Your Confidence: Develop the tools to regain confidence in yourself and your ability to live without substance use.

  • Increase Self Understanding: Better understand yourself, your desires to use, and the values you hold, and gain the ability to use this understanding to inform your future behaviors.

  • Develop Coping Skills: Develop new coping strategies that prioritize your health, wellbeing, and values.

  • Build Hope: Bolster your belief that change is not only possible, but attainable.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No. You don't need to have decided anything before reaching out. Many clients come to therapy still figuring out what they want — whether that's cutting back, stopping entirely, or just understanding their relationship with substances better. Wherever you are is a valid place to start.

  • Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based approach that helps people explore their own reasons for change — rather than being told what to do. It's collaborative and non-confrontational. The therapist's role is to help you get clearer on what matters to you and what's getting in the way, not to push a specific outcome.

  • No. Therapy is individual, private, and doesn't follow a prescribed framework like a 12-step model. Some clients find 12-step programs helpful alongside therapy; others prefer a purely one-on-one approach. We work with whatever path makes sense for you — including supporting clients who are already in a program and want additional individual support.

  • Yes. Substance use counseling is billed as standard psychotherapy. We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS). Self-pay and sliding scale options are also available. Contact us to verify your specific benefits before your first session.

  • Yes. Spencer offers secure video sessions for clients anywhere in Michigan. Teletherapy works well for substance use counseling — many clients find the privacy and flexibility of video sessions makes it easier to engage consistently. In-person sessions are available at our Ann Arbor office.

We accept BCBS insurance. Self-pay and sliding scale options available. Reach out — no commitment, just a conversation.
